The Choir is very fortunate to have Mary Chant as our Musical Director. Mary is well known for her work in the local amateur theatre, having played leading roles in various musical productions. She also teaches singing and is therefore able to utilise her theatrical experience and vocal talent to the great benefit of the Choir.

Accompanist, Jackie Ellmore, took formal lessons at the age of 6 and travelled throughout the country to enter various competitions and festivals. At 17 she left Devon to study piano performance at the Royal College, London under Kendall Taylor. She then studied Music Education and subsequently became the Music Specialist of the pre-prep department at Rowan Brae, Claygate. As well as teaching privately she and her late husband have led various church music groups which led to opportunities to compose the music for songs in order that they may be published for wider use. Although she has trained as a classical pianist she plays all types of music and enjoys improvising and arranging music for various occasions. In 2007 she moved back to Devon and was subsequently approached by the Barnstaple Ladies Choir to assist Peggy Spiers as deputy accompanist.

We are also very fortunate to have Jean Bell as an Assistant Accompanist, she is the organist for St John's Church in Newport, Barnstaple, and is enjoying the experience of accompanying the choir

The Choir is honoured to have Nigel Brooks as its President. Nigel is a composer and arranger and has kindly arranged items especially for the Choir, for which they are very grateful. We are also pleased to have Sue Boyle, one of our Altos, as our Assistant Musical Director.

The Choir is proud of its long-standing friendship with the Barbel Grosse Chor in Uelzen, Germany [Barnstaple's Twin Town].

The Choir have also had exchange visits with the City of Stoke on Trent MVC and Budleigh Salterton MVC and the Heyl St Piran Singers from Cornwall. Of course they also sing regularly with their friends in the Barnstaple MVC.

In the past the Choir has been honoured to be presented with the Town's Mayor's Cup for assistance to local organisations and also the Community Plate in recognition of their work. They have recorded three CD's which are available for sale at their Concerts.

Barnstaple Ladies Choir enjoys performing at concerts, however large or small the audience. Singing at weddings is also something of a speciality and it is a privilege to be a small part of a very special occasion.

If you would be interested in having the Choir entertain your group please contact us.
